Weekly Movie Review: Akeelah and the Bee

I know I know, you're thinkin' "Why should I watch a flick about a spelling bee."

Well, My answer, 'cause it's good.

Akeelah and the Bee, is about an eleven year old girl, who grows up in a "'hood" and goes to a school that can barely afford money for kickballs.
She is asked to enter a spelling bee since she is a spelling wiz (but not necessarily an "A" student, due to skipping class) and might make a name for Crenshaw Middle School.
She is reluctant, but eventually gives in.

The rest of the movie is about the process of going to the national spelling bee, which involves making new friends, lying to her mom, getting a spelling coach, hurting old friends, and bringing a neighborhood (and a family) together. :_)

I also liked this movie. Probably not as much as I thought I would, but it was good. I thought they glamorized her poverty a bit, but I loved her ambition and some of the other characters in the bee.

Yes perhaps, But I still like it. :)
